Ethical Identity

Writings in this section address the identity of Ethical Culture as a movement today. The Ethical Culture movement -- sometimes called Ethical Humanism -- began with the first Ethical Society in 1876, and now includes more than 20 Ethical Societies around the United States; a national federation of Ethical Societies, the American Ethical Union; and members of those Societies.

Because the Ethical Culture movement does not have a set creed, but does have a distinct identity on the American religious scene, you'll find articles here that explore the current commitments of the Ethical Culture movement rather than definitive documents about what members "must" believe. The material here is meant to be descriptive (describing what is), not prescriptive (describing what "must" be).

Ethical Words of Wisdom

Religion is a wizard, a sibyl . . .
She faces the wreck of worlds, and prophesies restoration.
She faces a sky blood-red with sunset colours that deepen into darkness, and prophesies dawn.
She faces death, and prophesies life.
